THE HOBBIT, SOUTHAMPTON
23rd February 2006
When I arrived at The Hobbit, David and David Mullins were already there, sitting in a quiet corner with a blond lady. He was very animated, enthusiastic and appeared to be thoroughly enjoying himself.
I went over to talk to David Mullins, he said they'd been expecting to do the sound check at around 6pm to 7pm and then do the gig at around 8ish, but the gig wasn't starting till 10pm and they hadn't had the soundcheck yet.
A student came over and asked David for the stool he was sitting on !! I couldn't quite believe it. David very kindly obliged and moved to empty wing chair that the lady who interviewed him had been sitting on. Very rude, but at the same time, very funny !! The pub is very popular with students from the university and was filling up quite a bit and both David’s went down to the basement, which was the actual venue. One student asked if he was "the famous David Sneddon" and he said NO !! It was very funny. Lots of students ( especially the girls) wanted photos with him and were talking to him for quite a while.
He was on stage first, and he sang songs from the EP. Then, on the spur of the moment, he said " I know this isn't really an acoustic venue but..." and then he sang Rocket Man, which hadn't been rehearsed at all but sounded great. ( poor David Mullins - he hadn't any idea he was going to be doing Rocket Man !!) All of the students really liked David's singing and the two men in front of me said to each other that he was very good. I'm not entirely sure that he had initially known that there would be a lot of students there, and was probably a bit nervous about how he'd be received but every single student there was very respectful and absolutely loved the music. David said he'd put the EP out without promotion.
Then Chris was on stage and he had a problem with the equipment at first, but soon got it sorted out and was able to carry on. His songs are instantly catchy and people were very impressed. I already have his EP but it was really nice to hear and see what he's like on stage for the first time.
It was nice to see how David's songs were received by the students, who all seemed to know his name.
