To help with missing David I've been re-editing Regal Room images. David is a wonderful artist and storyteller - and this shows in his photos.
I've been trying to cheer myself up editing old Regal room images! The gig October 2007 with Julian - oh dear so many memories. The rugby was on beforehand and the gig was late. Oh dear - just to see anything new of David - my editing has improved anyway! That was a fun gig I thought. I didn't think I had taken anything decent with that lamp in the corner- - but the Regal Room is a great venue for those kind of gigs.
Artists are 'storytellers' and David is a great one - his chat between songs, and the way his voice goes soft and then soars is very emotionally gripping.
It is not simply about the words, the notes or the rhythms – you link it home and connect to the heart.
Oddly the Distillers Bar was empty, as everyone was packed into the dark upstairs venue to watch England in the Rugby World Cup final. The game started at 8, so David’s set would be late tonight (worried as I have a train to catch) - and South Africa won the very tight defensive game. The venue is intimate and darkly lit with small round tables, and the shiny black grand piano draped with dark velvet curtains behind it, sits in the corner waiting for David’s set.
David sang 6 songs (plus 2 songs with Julian) and included 3 NEW songs: The Bricks Move On, Rocket Ship, Colder Blue, (with Julian - Alone and Touchdown) and Time, Wish You Well, & Salt Water.
I kept thinking.. I know that top you were wearing – it’s your Fame Academy top! LOL Your 3 new songs – unexpected, now those are songs…I instantly loved the feel of them, you are the genius and I don’t know how you keep doing it. ‘The Bricks Move On’ ‘Colder Blue’ and ‘Rocket Ship’. (some song info would be appreciated!)
David mentioned that he had been playing the same set the past year – and that he had three new songs. He said the songs would sound quite differently when they were recorded, and later asked Jay to think about how they might record them - in fact he mentioned recording 3 times during the gig...! He said, ‘This will be better in the Studio.’
I have this memory of David with his large blue notebook with his songs written in it. He said that he only wrote the new songs a few weeks ago, and the gig felt like watching David at work writing and rehearsing. David the new songs are very clever, they make me think of other songs, yet I can’t think of what at all. Your piano playing has warm emotions and soul. Last summer I felt the passions and heart of your new EP songs - but these songs are more multidimensional, yet light in feel, with more depth in the lyrics and themes. These are wonderful songs – your Ep songs are wonderful too – but these songs feel that step on, great to see you evolving. You write the best melodies, and combined with your vocals, so many stirring emotions.
JULIAN PERRETTA sang 2 songs - 'Alone' and ‘Touchdown. He said Touchdown, written with David, would be his single and how proud he was to sing it. Alongside his writing career, David pursues a career as a singer-songwriter of his more personal songs. One of the first things David said at the gig was about recording and no gigs planned for a while. Your performing and vocals were perfect at the Regal rooms, and ‘Colder Blue’ is stuck in my head.
Thank you so much.
