The Regal Room PHOTOS May 2008
It is a warmer day and people are sitting outside the Distillers in Hammersmith. I decide I’m going early to avoid last minute hassles.
It is much quieter since my previous visit, when the venue was packed with rugby supporters watching England in the World Cup Final.
Only one other singer songwriter on guitar and a girl performer, along with David.
The good news is it means David gets to perform a full set of 6 songs each.
David says he enjoys this venue, one of his favourites, and that he comes here nearly as often as Tony. It is lined with velvet-blue textured wall coverings. He will perform at a shiny black grand piano in the corner rather then the usual keyboards, which add an extra richness to his piano songs.
David sang 6 songs - Little Houses, Scars, Lisa, Northern lights, My Plan and NoOne.
The venue is very intimate, and I have a seat at the front at one of the small round tables.
David’s songs always seem to capture new moods and these are no different. With David Mullin’s creative plucked acoustic guitar and new feel riffs, alongside David’s expressive piano – he leaves space for David’s strong and moving musical voice.
The Regal Room venue is a favourite haunt of David's. Run by top host Tony Moore, it is perfectly suited to David's still yet vibrant voice. He's positioned at the grand piano in the corner and taking photos here is not at all easy. Which side of the small lamp to sit? David even wants to put his beer glass in front of his face! The good news is that if you enjoy the intimacy of a cosy relaxed venue, this one is perfect. A grand piano adds depth and richness to David's engrossing voice. The gigs here are truly about that magic music connection. Top marks to Tony for running venues that showcase artists at their best. This isn't my favourite place for photos, dealing with the varied lights, but it's my favourite for music. I was pleased with these photos though, and I feel they capture David's depth and integrity.
I’m always engrossed when David performs. David hasn’t sung Northern Lights ( a song about his home country of Scotland) live for nearly a year and it is awesome…
I felt choked and overcome and close to tears with it’s beauty.
At one point I ask David to move his beer bottle – oh dear which he put down in front of his face! He says, I am the bane of his life coming to take photos at the gigs and asking him to move his beer – I hope not!
Well I’d like to hear twice as long a set – but still. I keep dreaming of another full set like the one at Highbarn December 2006.
David said maybe a full hour set in Edinburgh in August with those fun Martian guys! – I hope so!
I enjoy the RR venue and it means a lot to see David back behind the grand piano.
I always think it’s the journey that matters and it’s wonderful to follow David’s journey. Hope you enjoy the pics!
