Davey Sneddon lit up a small corner of Glasgow on Saturday with his new band The Sham. Returning to his hometown brought a few nerves.
The venue, the Real Radio Stage, set near the junction of two ordinary small streets, with police security wandering about.
The Sham set up their gear and love their cool, classy look. John was giving his huge smile and waving to friends in the crowd.
David and the band appeared on stage and he lit up the Glasgow street as the sun peeked out, with his warm smile. David looks at ease with himself and everything just feels right with the sound, the look, the mood. Hearing the Sham's sound bounce off the surrounding buildings was an experience, worth the long wait for; to see and hear David back in Scotland.
A hesitant piano stirs the air, as David's voice breaks into a soaring, hurtful melody and Si partners with an echoing melancholic guitar riff, eventually drifting to an emotional calm. 'No sign of you, have I gone too far this time?' David seemed a little nervous to start with, maybe playing a stage rather than the more relaxed club venues. Hiding From Me though is a strong opening number and David soon warmed up. His partnership with John and their relaxed banter on stage always helps. Fallen Angel, more upbeat and with soaring vocals, was the song I didn't take to immediately, but love it now. Vocally it's strong and David gives it an edge and warmth:'Your wings are clipped but you will surely fly.'
David announced the next song as Upbeat Beat, a great gig song with a dancing rhythm, keeps the momentum going. Next was John's dancing fun Little Blue, which slows the pace a bit, a song about a Blue ghost apparently!
He then introduced 'Only a Boy' as the song he took to Universal when they suggested he started a band. Co-written with John and meant for only David to sing, he puts so much into ballads, an emotional shiver. David stood still to sing Star. This is a touching personal song, I love the way it changes pace and is charged with nervousness and excitement: 'Don't run away, you put me where I am, now I can.
When I listen to David's lyrics and singing I am at once sad, relaxed and happy, many emotions. This moves straight into the new single Goodbye Baby.'You do things that I never expect. Keep walking away give me time to reflect. ' and has a strong, striking rhythm as it flows into the chorus. This is expected to get good airplay and sounds great acoustically too.
His eyes have such a warm, sexy sparkle and he looked the happiest I've seen him. The Glasgow teenagers were so pleased of this chance to see, hear and meet the band; it was a mad, exciting, and exhausting day. I now have the Garage, the Metro and the Merchant city gigs. These days are only small steps towards David, John and the band's future, so that we can enjoy many exciting gigs - much to look forward to. Thank you guys!
