He kind of springs into action and commands the stage - and provides an engrossing performance.
He speaks of how well the EP is doing so far, which surprises him....., as he’s done no promo.
David performed – One Old Soul, Time, God or No God, Anticipation, Lady Lullaby and White Noise. After the gig David spent time signing EP covers.
It’s the first frost of winter and the sky is a clear blue, the hills far away, as the train takes me south again to another David gig. There’s a shining slate grey on the cold waters as suddenly the dawn breaks... after months of rain the sky fills with a perfect white glow, and the sun is a golden globe as it rises above the horizon. It flicks, flicks through the low trees.
*David released his new EP last week. I’ve listened to his live gigs the past three years, and it is very weird to have a studio recording. It’s more immediate, his vocals clearer, the backing more effective, totally complimenting, totally wonderful. The cover is David’s piano – the EP is about David’s musical voice.
As I near Cambridge the flat felds are full of water and the clouds roll in. The University town boasts rich red Gothic Halls and spires, where the elite study, cycle, run or row a punt on the river. It seems a bit surreal. After five gigs in a week ( Fleece & Firkin, Bristol, Oxford, Covent Garden, Cambridge) it is not surprising the boys are a bit tired tonight . David, Chris & Jake, three very original singer songwriters, and this is the last night of their present 'MySpace Lads Tour'.
The Boathouse venue is an upstairs loft, small and intimate - a black backdrop curtain and chairs lined up. For me this is how music works best for making that special audience connection.
*Chris Townsend
First on stage is young slender Chris with fairy lights woven round his mic. He has loads of personality on stage, a BIG smile, and projects his charged songs well. There was friendly and funny banter with three young guys at the front. His effects produce dynamic rhythms with a full band sound, very effective. Occasionally he pounds the side of his guitar, as he pumps those foot pedals. He has well written songs and a charismatic voice. Chris seems very motivated and he talked later about recording his album over in Boston. He is also studying for a Law degree. Shows lots of promise.
*Jake Hook
A more subtle and pensive performer, Jake plays and writes some very melodic, emotional tunes and sings with a wide-ranging heartfelt voice. His at times melancholy voice has sweet tones. He writes thoughtful songs about those ‘vapour trails’ in the sky, how we are butterflies or fireflies, our emotions like waterfalls. His songs often draw on nature and are very catchy. He was plugging his ‘live’ CD. Jake writes insightful poetry, he is vocally moving with strong piano playing. Worth a listen.
*David Sneddon
His set takes me to another place. Well what can I say of the enigmatic, charismatic and warm Mr Sneddon?
He kind of springs into action and commands the stage - and provides an engrossing performance. He looks on top form and speaks of how well the EP is doing so far, which he say surprises him, as he’s done no promo.
He kind of glows...oddly he is wearing his pole-dancing T shirt which took me back to Sham days. David was backed expertly by David Mullins on acoustic guitar.
His piano playing is strong, his vocals real and his performance polished. I am adoring his new song Anticipation. He says how much he’s enjoyed the tour with Chris and Jake.
*EP
The EP is magical, very wonderful. One Old Soul was the only song that surprised me, it’s my favourite song, so dramatic! David sings from the heart with refreshing honesty. Well done to Jake and Jay on the production – excellent. Top marks.
The three young guys have had such a busy fun tour – so here’s hoping for more. He’s given us the most wonderful new EP. It is wonderful, magical.
