MY BEDFORD PHOTOS 1ST May 2008
‘Assured Confidence’ – so much energy and cool vibes - and with a new rhythm and feel to the songs. The 3 Daves took centre stage again.
I don’t know what else to say. This was a David having fun with it. David looked well, very together and smart in black jacket, brocade tie, and textured shirt. Ah he dresses up well! His hair longer and face rounder (perhaps due to not playing football since breaking his wrist at Christmas).
He has been writing with David Mullins, his backing guitarist, for some guitar led songs, and it’s been going really well. David M said they instantly clicked, and it is good that David has a new writing partner he works well with. It takes time and I guess their playing together at the gigs the past year has brought them together musically too.
Which meant 4 new guitar-led songs with David coming in with piano – Little Houses, Scars, My Plan and No One..
He has a plan! no idea what it is, but he tells us as he sings. I used to wonder that he wasn’t doing this for his own set – so it was fun to see on his first new song ‘Little Houses’ that he has added a more taping your feet rhythm.
David always surprises and challenges with his music - and he plays with conviction.
The new songs are deep with questioning soul-searching - ‘Little Houses keep me safe inside’ ‘I don’t want the scars, they’ll walk all over me’
‘’I’ll keep banging my piano with my broken hand.’ ‘I guess you can’t trust no one, And now I’m no one too.’
I’ve written before, David’s songs bring ‘ thought-provoking introspection’ - they also offer a depth that few artists reach emotionally.
As Bet said before, his voice ‘still gets me where it hurts.’
The Bedford has a relaxed dark intimacy with all tables facing the stage, and I always enjoy gigs here. It has a fun Bar beside it which is completely seperated through a walk way from this dark, circular venue that always makes me think of an Elizabethan theatre and is ideal for the artists performing.
Those wanting to chat can go to the adjoining bar. The light at the Bedford is soft and clear and I have been fortunate to get possibly my best shots here.
I've heard many say they enjoy this venue a lot - both punters and performers. Run by Tony Moore who supports aspiring artist - BIg thanks Tony!
Photos - David was in good light and I hope the photos tell more than words ...
'Magic' David’s set had lots of energy, charisma, soul and positive vibes.
Things are gelling well and David sounded in excellent vocals and looked very comfortable. His beautiful clear voice filled the dark room.
He and David Mullins gave a top quality and tight performance, as the packed audience listened attentively.
I enjoy when David improvises on the piano with new rhythms – I’d like to hear him do that more often.
* David sang 7 songs – One Old Soul, Time, Lady Lullaby, Rocket Man, Northern Lights, Salt Water, White Noise.
He had practised Lady Lullaby all day so as not to forget the words - for some reason having a stumbling block with this song.
David croons romantically and tonight Lady L is perfect.
With David’s perfect pitch and timing he sings live flawlessly, and there are not many singers who come close.
His clear voice floats above our heads, and makes me feel free.
David Mullins, his new backing guitarist, plays instinctive gentle rhythms that harmonise and flow inter-playing to David’s moving piano melodies.
I notice David occasionally taking his vocals soft and subtle, making a good contrast to his strong vocal highs.
David’s cover of Elton’s ‘Rocket Man’ shows the range of his talents - his ability to re-invent the classic songs and make them his own. .
David writes well-structured and dynamically satisfying songs. I’d like perhaps more variations of the verse/chorus theme at times, with more instrumentation allowing it on occasion to escape from the song, and also more use of space. With more backing musicians added this might happen more – as long as David’s PIANO leads. .
it speaks in a wonderful way emotionally. ' One Old Soul' is a beautiful song with powerful vocals, and I love it more and more.
Just like his music, David’s face also has more character now. He keeps his music and his performance honest and from the heart.
David Sneddon The Bedford October 2006: My first time seeing David solo. His keyboards were brought centre stage, and he gave an engrossing performance.
David sang 6 years ago now in 2002 on a Tv show, and showed the expression, strength and edge of his high tenor voice – and his passion and love of life and music. He plays piano and writes his own songs - what was he doing on a reality/talent quest tv show that was ready to label him boyband? At the live gigs, David often tells jokes and appears lighthearted - and then when he starts to sing he shifts gear totally and his clear 'honest passions' come to the fore and how serious he is about his music. His voice dominates and veers from rich lower tones to searing highs, while he plays piano with conviction and drama. I know he worries about forgetting lyrics! His songs are insightful, challenging and true. About how love might see us through life's obstacles - and he comes at things from new angles. His melodies are beautifully expressive. He's taken on board many influences and made them his own voice.
